When you think of your elementary school days, what stands out to you? I want my students to remember our classroom full of things to investigate and learn about.
My students love to explore our world and discover new things.
I teach at a small school in rural Florida. My classes include many students for whom English is their second language and students who have special learning needs. Our fourth grade is departmentalized and I try to do projects & find enough materials to get every child involved. I am amazed at the level and complexity of the conversations they have during project/lab time and try have as many hands-on activities as possible in order to draw out those conversations.
My Project
I became a teacher because I wanted to help children fall in love with books. I love matching a reluctant reader up with a book that I know he or she will love. To do that, I have to have a vast library full of books that today's children love to read.
Over the years, the "favorite books" in the classroom library have been loved to the point of being held together with more tape & love than book binding.
I need to replenish the library so that my current students have books to enjoy.
The series I have selected: Captain Underpants; Dork Diaries; Fablehaven; and Magic Tree House Nonfiction books have been selected based on what I see my students borrowing from me or requesting on a regular basis this year. I hate having to tell a child that every single book of their favorite series is currently loaned out to other students.
