Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher in a public school in Chicago. My students come from low-income families. Although my students are at different reading levels, they all love to read new books and to share books with each other.
My school and I have worked really hard to put together a wonderful classroom library. We have so many super books (from everybody\'s favorite, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, to newer series like The Bailey School Kids). Our classroom library consists of picture books, chapter books, nonfiction books, fiction books, poetry books, and even some comic books. I love it when my students are excited about picking out books and sharing them with others.
However, we have a major problem in our classroom when my students go to look for new books to read. Our bookshelves are always falling apart. I purchased some bookshelves for my class at Target in the fall. However, no matter how many times I\'ve stayed late to super glue them back together, they always seem to break again the following week.
My students are hesitant to pick out books and to handle them, because they are afraid that the bookshelves will fall over. At times, the reading area has to be closed, because the shelves have fallen and I haven\'t had the time to put them back together. It makes me sad when my students handle the shelves so cautiously and with such trepidation. I want my classroom to be kid-friendly and for them to be able to use the bookshelves to discover new books and new experiences without the fear that the shelves are going to break. Our wonderful books deserve shelves that will hold them.
We are hoping to get three new bookshelves for our classroom library.
Thank you for making my students\' reading experiences more fulfilling.
