I teach in one of the lowest performing schools in District 17, PS 316. We are a Title 1 school, where almost 100% of the children are eligible for free lunch. First grade should be an exciting place that ignites the interest and imagination of all of the children. They should clamor to come to school in the morning. A classroom has to have a variety of activities and quality materials designed both to hold the children's interests and to ensure their efforts are successful. I have acquired a substantial library of children's fiction and non-fiction books over the years. Unfortunately, I do not have any bookshelves, or shelf space of any kind, on which to display the books. There are not enough tables or desks in the school on which to place my library, which until now has been displayed in baskets on extra tables which I'd scavenged. (Those rickety tables have been discarded, no replacements have been ordered). I am passionate about making my library presentable, and accessible to my students. I allow the children to borrow books overnight, and encourage the children to use the library throughout the day for reference and reading pleasure. A donation of adequate shelving in which to organize the books for easy access by the children would be a tremendous help.
