Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 4th graders in a low socioeconomic status area. Our school has a population of students where 94.1% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more than three-fourths of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. In spite of their circumstances, they still come to school ready, enthusiastic, and yearning for new knowledge.
While many of my students lack resources at home, they strive to excel in the classroom.
It is not uncommon for my students to want to stay in during recess or after school to enhance their own learning. Our community rallies for and values education and is supportive of our school and our students.
My Project
Our school is a second year Leader in Me School where students are taught the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and practice these principles daily. Students created a notebook that monitors progress toward academic and personal goals. These notebooks are a reflection each student that are personalized with student data and goal setting. Awards and certificates are kept in the Victories tab as a reminder that hard work pays off. These notebooks enabled our school to have student led conferences where the notebooks contained the evidence of student grades. Students understood their grades and were able to articulate to parents the reasoning behind each score.
Students work daily maintaining their Leader in Me Notebooks.
By storing them on the requested bookshelf, both students and classroom visitors will have quick access to the notebooks. Right now, their notebooks are kept in their desks and if a classroom visitor wanted to look through a notebook, students are interrupted during instruction. Having a bookshelf will allow students to show off their skills without interruption.
Our classroom also needs pencil sharpeners and black Expo Markers. The pencil sharpeners I have now do not work well. Students try for several minutes to sharpen a pencil and, by the time it is sharp enough, half the pencil has been shaved away. The supply of Expo Markers would allow me to constantly have the darkest ink possible while using the white board. I have a student with color-contrast issues with her eyes who needs me to have the darkest black ink possible when I write. This causes me to go through many Expo Markers.
These are basic needs that would help my classroom run much more efficiently. Thank you for your support.
