My students need a class set of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We read every day because we're not just trying to learn a years worth of material, we're trying to make up for lost time.
My students want a great education and they work hard.
Unfortunately, the majority of my students enter 8th grade reading at a 5th grade level. What's the solution to being 3 years behind in reading level? Reading all the time. My students read every day in every spare moment. They know that it's not enough to grow one year of reading because we have to close the gap. My book groups are leveled, which means students are reading books that meet them right at the point where they are challenged so that they can grow as quickly as possible. Each of my students have read at least 4 books this year and because our book groups are leveled, we've actually gone through 10 different class sets. We're running out of high interest books around the 6th and 7th grade levels.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a perfect book for my students. It talks about poverty with humor and provides a different perspective on some of the problems that my students deal with every day. It has amazing comic illustrations that engage and inspire reluctant readers. Every time I've handed my one copy to a student, I get it back in a week because students can't put it down. I can't wait to read the book as a class, but we need a class set.
Your donation will help my students overcome the fact that our state underfunded their education by 292 million dollars this year.
It will help 8th graders enter high school reading above an elementary school level. It will help young men and women get one step closer to graduating and succeeding in college. Thank you!
