This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing, smart, and brilliant: regardless of their home situation. Therefore, they deserve to use resources that encourage understanding and development even when their families are unable to provide them.
It is my goal as a teacher to help foster a learning community where all students feel safe, secure, represented, heard and empowered through conversation and collaboration where I am not the only voice heard.
From the minute scholars walk in the door of our classroom, I focus on their potential, growth, and goals that we set for them to see success in first grade. I may not be able to control their home lives or what is happening in the world around them; but, I can control their experience during the school day and help guide them towards success within our classroom community. By doing this in a positive way, I am hoping to inspire the scholars in our room to start life on a path of excellence.
My Project
It is so important in a constantly changing world to have understanding for differences and similarities in people. One way I cant ensure that my students understand their work is through books.
Imagine children having access to books that represent you, represent your world, represent things you don't know and understand yet!
These books will continue to encourage the print-rich classroom and culturally diverse classroom that I work daily to create. Daily in our classroom, we share read aloud, participate in tough discussions, and explore the world through literacy. Every book that is in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read and be read to.
All of these books have been selected with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
