Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are determined to finish high school, after entering the U.S. recently, living in high poverty and often having left one or both parents behind in their home country. They face many hardships daily sending money home from their part time jobs, separation from family members, and learning English as a new language. I have selected a list of culturally related books written by award winning authors, some of whom have lived the personal struggles and accomplishments of my students. When they have access to these books and teachers that will help them with literacy extensions they will develop their English language skills while also learning across topics and subject areas covered within these books.
My students are eager, hard working and creative who will excel in the opportunities to look through mirrors of this literature and see themselves, while also gazing through windows and discovering whole new worlds.
Authentic and accurately written books can bring comfort as my students relax in the safety of a good book, while embellishing their minds with a new language and new ideas as they grow and develop into mature and responsible citizens.
My Project
My students are eager to learn. They will discover places, ideas, times, facts, and more through the pages of these books. Their eyes and imaginations will be opened to what the world can offer and what they are capable of doing. They will be able to discover people and places they may never be exposed to due to their current status of living in poverty.
My students will learn to write reflectively as they connect text to self, text to other texts, and texts to parts of the world.
They will write as they learn to express themselves and use their own voices and words in replication of what they will read in these books.
