Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a sixth grade teacher at a high poverty and high needs middle school. My students have already overcome many obstacles in their short lives. They come to school not just to learn but also for two hot meals (often the only meals of the day), warmth, safety, structure, and to be loved. Reading is often a struggle for most of my students. They did not have the benefit of being read to at home as a child. After 20 years of teaching here, my biggest passion is still helping my struggling or non-readers find that right book that transforms them into life-long readers. All of the books in this project were requested by my students.
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples." ~ Mother Theresa
We have an extremely diverse population, and the needs of our students are great. Due to lack of funding, it is often difficult to fulfill these needs. With your help, we can create the ripples that build into great tsunamis. As a literacy teacher in a high poverty school, one of my biggest challenges is getting my students to want to read. As with any activity, one does not improve without practice. It is my wish that with books that they want to read, my students will become better readers. I am hoping with your help, I will be able to provide those books for my students. Hopefully, some will even grow to love reading like I do!
