I am very lucky to teach a wonderful group of kindergarten and first graders that have a variety of physical, cognitive, and behavioral disabilities.
These students work very hard to learn new things.
I spend my day teaching small groups of special education students in my classroom and co-teaching in a first grade reading class and a kindergarten math class where I am able to work with small intervention groups in the classrooms to all students in need.
Our urban school has a high poverty level and is made up of a very diverse population.
My Project
As a special education teacher, I work with students reading at all different levels and abilities. The students have access to wonderful books in their general education classroom, but unfortunately my classroom is not eligible to be part of these classroom library purchases. I have had to piece together books that other teachers don't want anymore or books I buy myself.
These books will allow me to not only "beef" up my current classroom library, but will hopefully be engaging make them want to pick up a book and read.
It is often hard to find engaging books at the lower reading levels. The books I have found have familiar characters that they can find in higher level books. These books also provide a variety of interests that hopefully will catch the eye of students.
