I work as a Title I Reading Teacher in a rural, central Illinois community. Our school services students in grade K-5.
Our school has a warm, nurturing environment, where the teachers know the students by name and the students likewise know the teachers, even when the student is not in a teacher's class.
The majority of our students are now attending the same school as their parents. Our school may be a small, but our size gives the school a family feel.
My students love to read books that they get to choose. However, during guided reading time, they are less eager to pick up our book being read. Some of the factors for this include: they have already read that book several times, the book is old and falling apart, and the book is not interesting to them. We also have the problem that many books that the students are interested in, we do not have enough copies due to books not being returned or they are in a state of disrepair that we can no longer use it.
My students are begging for new books to be used during guided reading time.
The four new book titles will give my students new books to read and discuss during guided reading. Reading comprehension is a skill that my students struggle with. This is due to the fact that they are not interested in reading story and are not paying attention to what they are reading and listening to. These new books will help my students get involved during our book discussions.
My student enjoy reading books from the Magic Tree House series and the My Weird School series. They also love reading nonfiction books about famous people and will be excited to read and learn about Rosa Parks. The book pockets and library cards will help us to keep track of who has what book checked out for guided reading. This will hopefully keep our book sets complete for years to come.
