Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third-grade students love learning and new challenges. I teach at an urban elementary school in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area. About 90% of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch. Many are dropped off at 7 a.m. when the school opens and several are picked up when it closes at 6 p.m.
My students love reading books!
They happily chose another book after finishing and taking a comprehension quiz. My current classroom library has seen better days. At least a third of the books are taped together, and half the covers are missing the bottom right corner from overuse. My students need new books!
My Project
Instilling a love of reading is a gift. Giving children the opportunity to choose books they are interested in, and being able to read them independently at their reading level gives them a sense of accomplishment. The more children read, the better readers they become which, in turn, will hopefully become a love of reading. My students will take the books home and enjoy.
I have chosen books with my students' interests in mind.
My nonfiction section at a second-grade level does not include many books, so I have included as many as I could find. My students will be thrilled with our new books!
