My students attend a partial Title I school and are an amazing group of students. They are English language learners who love to learn and are always excited to see what it is we will be learning next. My students are a very diverse group. Where some struggle, others excel; this is what makes them special kids. They have strengths that they are always tapping into and using to help one another. It is these skills that I nurture and use as a vehicle to teach.
Their love of learning is contagious.
I often wonder, is it me inspiring them or the other way around? Their smiles and obvious concentration on projects, keep me going! I search out new engineering problems, and while I do I ask myself, "Is this really cool enough? Is this really going to be a positive learning experience and keep them engaged?" Like I said, they're amazing and already up against so much.
My Project
Last year I bought the Amulet series because it looked cool. Little did I know that those books would spark a craze. The kids were so involved with these books that they’d make batters and desks just to be the next one to get volume 2 and so on. The students these days are really into graphic novels and why wouldn’t they be? New stories with colorful and vivid comic strip like graphics bring to life fantastic settings and characters. Similarly, authors of graphic novels have given new life to classics which will help us meet our reading standards and goals!
