Books to Teach Reading Comprehension Skills & Strategies
My students need these books in order to do a full year unit called Rooted in Reading. We need these books to teach the comprehension and grammar skills that go along with each book.
My students are the best! They're constantly growing and developing, and that's what 2nd grade is all about. They love to engage in projects and of course...ask why. My 2nd grade students are eager to learn, explore, and discover. My students come from low income families but they are the most thankful and grateful kids I have ever known.
When I read to my students, they SOAK up the information, comprehension strategies, skills, and underlying theme of each book.
The enjoy being read to and will enjoy even more the projects and skills that go along with each book.
I have a chance here for my second graders to go farther than ever ina year of school. Please help us meet our standards and go further!
My Project
For each book, I have a project, anchor chart, reading strategy, and grammar skill for students to learn...just based off a picture book. For example...In the book Edward the Emu, we will be working on the reading skill of making predictions and the grammar skill of capitals and punctuation. For the text Fireflies! the reading skills we will work on is cause and effect as well as author's purpose with the grammar skill of homophones.
Teaching reading and grammar strategies using picture books are a sure way of getting students to understand the Common Core Standards..
Students LOVE to read picture books and the icing on the cake is the reading strategies and grammar skill they will learn.
This overview has the 2nd and 3rd grade Common Core Standards that apply to both the comprehension and grammar skills for each book.
