My students are creators, innovators, communicators, and collaborators. They come to school ready to learn, and they learn the most through hands-on experiences.
These students are our future engineers, doctors, teachers, mechanics, and politicians.
Students participating in collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking prepares them for college, work, and life.
My school is close to 50% free and reduced lunch. My students are excited, energized, and eager to learn. They love learning and laughing. They are self-motivated and are extremely proud of their learning.
My Project
I recently went to a teacher conference that included many sessions. One session focused on picture books that help with social-emotional learning. Many of these books also provide perspectives/knowledge of a variety of cultures. These books also include some social studies/history that students may not have ever heard before.
These books will help with social-emotional learning but will also foster so much more!
It is crucial that students see themselves in books, that they learn about history in multiple cultures, and that they are getting their social-emotional needs met, in addition to academics.
For example, the book, "Say Something," by Peter H. Reynolds, is a short picture book that shows and encourages students to find a way to share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings. I love that it includes many options, in addition to simply SPEAKING. This gives students the confidence to "speak" up in whatever way is most comfortable for them!
