In first grade, we teach students to read, write and do math. We also teach them to be strong thinkers, independent learners and participating members of our classroom community.
Students at our school come from a rich and diverse community.
They speak many languages, represent many socio-economic backgrounds, and are members of different ethnic and racial communities. However, they all share a love of learning and a dedication to our whole-school community.
My Project
As we teach students the skills they need to be successful in first grade, we also teach them the social and emotional skills they will use every day to relate to those around them. We use the Open Circle curriculum to teach them skills such as positive self talk, giving and receiving compliments, dealing with annoying behavior, and engaging in problem-solving strategies.
These books will enrich our classroom library by providing students with literature to support the social and emotional curriculum in our classroom, not just reading, writing and math.
Students will hear stories to help them understand and practice some of the skills they learn about in Open Circle.
