My students need just right books to take home and read for daily practice. We know that students become better readers by having choice and practicing reading all of the time.
I am so excited to be opening a brand-new elementary school this year with my colleagues! Our students come from a very diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Every year I meet new youngsters who are unique and have diverse interests. My students this year are reading from Kindergarten to third grade reading levels, so I need help stocking my library with books to meet their interests and needs. I am a huge supporter of "just right" reading and giving my students opportunity to grow, regardless of their achievement level at the beginning of the year.
My Project
My first grade students are excited to read, read, read! My goal with this project is to provide my students with a wide-range of texts at many reading levels for students to take home to read. I plan to structure a daily opportunity for students to "shop" on a daily basis for their take-home books. The sets of books I selected below include both fiction and non-fiction texts.

This will be instrumental in making reading for pleasure a norm in the daily lives of youngsters. This supports our school objective of developing a culture of readers and thinkers.
