Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Each day I have the great privilege of teaching sixteen three- and four-year-old students. Through play, we learn math and literacy content, but also important language and life skills. We learn to communicate our needs, build enduring friendships, and be proud of who we are and who we are becoming.

We are a tight-knit HeadStart classroom located in a public school in the southeast quadrant of Washington, DC.

The community surrounding our school has many needs. Yet in spite of their challenges, my students arrive each day eager to learn, create, and prepare for the wider world.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of children's books that address fear and resilience. As we prepare for a new life after COVID-19, many of my prekindergarten children have questions and concerns. This is a time of uncertainty and confusion.

Storybooks are a great way for children to understand their fears and learn to manage them appropriately.

I plan to use these books to help my young students identify their emotions so that together we can begin to heal. These books will also be available for my students to take home so that they can be shared with their families as well.
