This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach second grade reading in a Title One school, in Washington DC, where all of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as seven-year-olds are surreal; however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year, we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit. No matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"
My students beat the odds every single day.
Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter third grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy. Despite these statistics, ninety percent of my students leave second grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"
My Project
My second grade students love when I read books aloud to them. They also love having group conversations about the books we have read. This project contains excellent read aloud books that will help my students to develop their social emotional skills.
These books will allow my students to think and discuss themes like perseverance, how to be a good friend, growth mindset, and how to manage anger.
I am certain that these books will allow my students to better discuss their emotions. I am excited to see my students' knowledge of social emotional skills grow as we read and discuss these great books.
