My students are all teenagers working toward their high school diplomas. They all have disabilities, including learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, emotional disabilities, speech and hearing impairments, and physical disabilities.
They are a great group of students who are trying to navigate through high school and deal with typical teen issues.
These students need to work harder to learn new material in their classes. I am their support system and teach them lots of the basic skills that they are missing.
I want a class set of the novels Hate List by Jennifer Brown, and One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus. I want to read these novels in my class with my students. I will use them to teach vocabulary, and reading comprehension strategies.
Most of my students struggle with reading and do not enjoy reading at all.
This is why it is critical that I choose novels that are both relevant and interesting to my students. These two novels are about current issues that teens face everyday, such as: bullying, dating, social media, school violence, peer pressure, and trying to fit in.
