My students need high-interest novels and chapter books such as Fly Guy, The Bad Guys, and Pig The Pug to foster independent reading success.

My Students

Our school is a pre-k through 6th grade campus in Montgomery, Texas. Our 2nd grade class is made up of 20 students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of my students are English Language Learners, and others are Gifted and Talented. Some of our students and teachers were affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, causing our parents who are paid by the hour some increased economic hardship. Many families have relocated or are supporting relatives who have been displaced.

In our classroom, we are a family.

My students are eager learners who work hard and encourage each other to succeed! Our classroom community encourages a growth mindset. We encourage each other to strive for Mustang P.R.I.D.E. which is a feature of our character development program. Each day I see students demonstrating purpose, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence.

Some of our daily activities include reading workshop (read to self, buddy read, listening station, free writing, and word study), math workshop (math tubs, computer games, partner problem solving, iPad fact fluency), social studies, science, and more! We love centers and small group instruction time.

My Project

When this project gets funded, students will have a wider selection of books to choose from in our classroom library. I know they will flock to these new collections of Fly Guy and The Bad Guys, second grade favorites! I can imagine their laughter reading Pig The Pug! Please help me foster independent reading success by beefing up our classroom library. Students who are able to pick just right books are more confident and engaged readers. My students absolutely love to read! We make reading a priority every day, especially since many of our families have been impacted by hurricane Harvey recently. These students have lost belongings or are sharing their home or bedroom with relatives who have moved in. Families are working harder than ever, so many student only have time to read at school.
