My students are warm, friendly, and curious kids who are excited to come to class and learn every day. They love asking questions and having class discussions. At 11, 12, and 13 years old, they are figuring out who they are and what their passions are. My school is a positive environment for them to be in each day. We are a Title I school where 53% of the school population receives free or reduced-price lunch, and 70% are minorities. This creates a diverse culture for students, and they are able to learn a lot from each other. The students have school spirit and drive; this shows in their daily actions.
I teach several classes including 8th grade English, 7th grade writing, and ESL Literacy Support.
I have a wide-range of reading and writing abilities and ESL levels that come in my classroom. Some of my students have recently moved to the United States from another country. All of my students, no matter if they are Entering ESL students or 8th grade English students, try their best every day and are eager to learn.
My Project
"We show students we love them by looking after them as readers." This quote by educator Nanci Atwell resonates with me as I think of how I feel about my students and reading. I love sharing my own passion for reading and books with my students. My goal for them is to become lifelong habitual readers.
To look after them as readers and help foster a love of books, I have created a library within my classroom.
This provides choice and access to books for my students. We read every day in class to develop our reading life. The books in this project will be a great addition to this library. Several of the books are a continuation of a book my students enjoyed, such as Swing It, Sunny and Maximum Ride. Neal Schusterman's new book Thunderhead is a book I know they would be excited to read. By continually adding new books and books the students request to the library, it will help them develop as readers.
