This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an inner-city school and most students live across the street in a federally subsidized housing project. Our student population is unique because 60% of the students are English Language Learners. Of those 60%, 95% are from refugee families. The student population is 94% minorities. 98% of the students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
My school has one of the most culturally diverse populations of students in the district.
We celebrate our differences by bringing our students, family, and community together. My students are excited to come to school everyday because of the joy they find in learning and the growth they are makng.
I am proud that our school is the center of our community. It is our students' home. They feel safe, loved, and cared for. This is my fourth year teaching there, and each year I'm there I realize the impact I have on my students' education and lives.
My Project
It is a goal of early educators to develop a love of learning and reading within a child. In addition to have a classroom culture that fosters the love of learning, books that students love are also needed. Having a series of books creates a love of reading because students fall in love with the characters and their stories.
Students are excited to read books that they have a connection with.
The books that I have chosen are funny, engaging, and at an appropriate reading level. Once students finish one book in a series, they are excited to read the next. This helps create an understanding of characters, fluency, and most importantly, a love for books.
