"Give me a man or woman who has read a thousand books and you give me an interesting companion. Give me a man or woman who has read perhaps three and you give me a dangerous enemy indeed." - Anne Rice, The Witching Hour
The students who attend our school are excited about learning each day.
They come to us from many different types of homes. Some students are living with extended families, single parents, or a two parents. Most of the families struggle financially, and are not able to provide school supplies for their students. This makes it difficult to complete projects in the classroom without the help of the community. Many of our students are exposed to inappropriate behaviors at home and in their neighborhood. They can quickly say the wrong thing to another person and not realize the effect it will have. Talking about emotions, apologizing, and doing the right thing are topics we discuss daily in our classroom.
I am requesting Bullying in Schools and Stop Bullying books to read with my students to learn how to identify and prevent bullying. My students want to create books to teach others about diversity, acceptance and bully prevention. We have read many books in our class about different cultures, diversity, prejudice, and people who have overcome injustices to help change our world. My students expressed an interest in creating books to share with others about what they have learned. Sharing their books will be an important part of learning and teaching diversity to their peers. Creating books will allow my students to take ownership of their learning. This will help prevent bullying in our schools because students will learn that being different is acceptable. Our differences are what make this world a wonderful place to live. In addition to writing books with the iPad, students will be able to use different apps to learn about how to end bullying.
I like the quote I selected because I believe children who read will learn about many types of conflicts and resolutions and be able to solve their problems appropriately.
Becoming authors of their own books about diversity and bullying prevention will have a lasting impact on the authors and the readers. Providing a safe learning environment for all of my students is my goal.
