Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a diverse group of motivated, hard-working and passionate learners. Living in an urban neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC, some of our students find themselves below grade level or struggling to learn English. However, we provide all the resources and support to help these students reach grade level expectations by the end of each school year, by teaching them to work through the curriculum at their own pace. At our school, we emphasize that education is a journey and not a competition. Through personal devices for all students grades 3-8, free breakfast, lunch and snack every day, and an extended school day so there is time for mentorship and intervention, our students are equipped with the power to overcome any challenges and reach any and all of their personal goals.
My Project
My students are from low-income homes. Therefore, their access to new and intriguing books at home is limited. With this project, we will receive books like, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid, ” that they can take home to read for homework. I can ensure that students always have a book to take home for the night, still while maintaining a full and compelling classroom library with the books I already have.
With many of my students facing many issues at home, sometimes bringing a book back to me is the last thing on their mind.
With these books, it will be a stress free loan. If they can return it, wonderful! However, if they cannot, there will be no penalty and hopefully someone else in the family can read it. This project will allow for our classroom to have multiples of specific books and therefore allow students to take one and for our classroom to still have another copy.
