We need 40 copies of "The Hate U Give" and 40 copies of "Everything, Everything." My students need interesting and engaging contemporary summer reading books, so they can discover the power of reading for pleasure!
For each student in our high school, there is a book they love, though many of our students do not yet know or believe that. Our mission is to change this, to create motivated, engaged individuals who see themselves as readers, and who see reading as a way to better understand themselves and the world around them.
The right book in the hands of a reluctant reader can change one life, one family, one community.
Our district is richly diverse, and many of our students have had limited opportunities outside of school to fall in love with reading. We are on a mission to spark a genuine motivation for reading in each student.
As we move toward incorporating more and more independent reading choices both in and out of school, more and more students have already begun taking books home, or asking for books similar to ones they have enjoyed. They are beginning to understand that reading is about more than processing words and answering questions. They are beginning to see themselves in books.
My Project
Students who do not read over the summer experience a "summer slide" in reading skills. By senior year, students who do not read over the summer months are four years behind those who do.This achievement gap can be closed by putting engaging, contemporary books into the hands of students.
This summer we will be purchasing a book for each incoming freshman to keep, so they can read over the summer and build or begin a home library.
Students will be able to choose from a list of seven different titles so they can choose something that sounds interesting to them. Five of the titles have already been purchased - just two to go!
