My students visit our school library both on their own and with their classes. They eagerly flock to my shelves to read books that spark their interests. Keeping the shelves stocked with compelling books, and keeping those books in good condition, can be a difficult task.
My students are a great bunch of kids, from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
With all of my students, nearly every genre and subject is in demand. When students have access to books that interest them, they love to read. Our students tend to be less economically well off, and I want to ensure that they still have equal access to the materials that are available to students in wealthier neighborhoods.
My Project
When students have access to books that they actually want to read, they read more. This seems obvious because it is, but funding is often far too limited to purchase enough copies of the books that are in demand. Help me encourage reading by giving my students more books they actually want to read -- like Svetlana Chmakova's Berrybrook Middle School series, and the newest copy of the Splatoon manga.
Giving my kids books they want to read keeps them reading, builds their reading skills, and makes them more likely to read OTHER books.
Help me get more and more of our students interested in reading so as to build a culture of literacy.
