I teach students with autism from kindergarten through second grade in a self-contained classroom in Camden, NJ. They are fun and curious students who love to interact and explore. In class, they love storytime and hands-on activities. We provide a structured environment and my students are very routine-oriented.
New Jersey is currently the second hardest-hit state when it comes to COVID19 and the change has been extremely difficult for them to cope with.
Every weekday we have a zoom lesson so they can see their friends and interact with hands-on activities. My students have not been in school since March 13th. Staff found out that night and we didn't get to take many items with us because we didn't know we would be out for as long as we have been, while the numbers affected have increased. As of now, we don't think we will be returning to the buildings for this school year. Remote learning is continuing while we navigate this disruption in routine.
Every year we learn about the life cycle of a butterfly in science class. We then have caterpillars that we watch hatch in our classroom. The students love to watch the caterpillars transform into butterflies. I want my students this year to have that same experience, even though we are not in school together. I do not have enough habitats though for each student to have at home so I am requesting an additional one so all my students will have access to this experience as we talk about them and observe them through our zoom lessons.
With schools closed down, so is our city library.
I am requesting books based on their interests so they can each have some books to read with their families. I also am looking to get magnets that they can use on their magnetic dry erase boards that I received from a prior DonorsChoose project. Lastly, I am asking for fruit snacks that are vegan friendly because I have students who are vegan in my class.
