I teach a second grade class in the Bronx of 23 students. My students are extremely hard working but many of them come in below grade level. I look at guided reading as the time I can give the students the individualized attention they need to make serious gains in the area of reading. My lowest guided reading group is at a level that I do not have guided reading books for. These students need every opportunity possible to make strong gains so that they are not struggling readers the rest of their lives. To give these students the proper teaching they need our classroom needs guided reading books at their level. If my classroom had guided reading books at my lowest reading groups level I am positive that my students will make significant gains this school year.
