Books That Reflect Who We Are

My students need early chapter books with multiracial and multicultural characters, as well as picture books about famous African-American and Latino leaders.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a teacher at a Title I school, my students are faced with challenges inside and outside of the classroom. My ultimate goal is, in partnership with their parents and families, to help to guide them to become outstanding citizens who believe in their potential and persist in reaching their goals.

My first graders this year are avid readers and engaged learners.

They love to read and ask questions -- SO many questions! At such a young age, it amazes me how they take real ownership over their reading growth and progress.

My Project

First grade is an amazing time in a student's life. Learning to read for the first time is like opening a door unto a whole new world. My students are hungry to read anything and everything, slurping it up and loving it.

During such a pivotal time in a reader's life, it is vital that students have access to books with main characters that reflect their own racial and ethnic background.

Students deserve to see themselves as a part of the literary world, rather as than a subcategory.

The books that I have requested have strong multiracial and multi-ethnic main characters, characters whose stories and everyday experiences are relatable, engaging, and responsive to my fantastic students.
