Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves almost four hundred, New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About thirty percent are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
We are a school that specializes in academics, business and art.
We promote college and career readiness with year-round experiences that include many work-based and service-learning opportunities for all our hard-working students, including those economically disadvantaged.
Although my students are hard-working, enterprising and try to take advantage of every opportunity presented to them, we often lack the sustainable resources needed to gain that hands-on experience to creatively compete at the top level.
Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters. Families do not have the means to pay for educational resources and experiences.
My Project
My classroom promotes a culture of learning environment by creating a high-performing, project based learning, in a simulated workplace that allows students to learn in ways that are beneficial to their unique needs.
My school is working on revamping courses into a culture of project based learning because many of our students, especially those most further from opportunity, are not prepared for the twenty-first century and the challenges they will face as they move into the adult work.
As a department, we work together to determine each student's strengths and weaknesses so that we can design instruction to meet the needs of every student.
One of my goals this year is to ensure that every student is college and career ready by mastering 21st century skills, especially as they relate to financial literacy.
Mastery of financial literacy and money skills is often a struggle, especially for my kids who lack real world experiences so books that foster project based learning is essential.
My students will be using these books as resources to help focus on strengthening knowledge, implementation of strategies, finding real world connections, and multiple entry points that differentiate content, process, and products based upon the specific financial literacy skill they need to master. Mastering financial literacy skills when they are young will help them make better decisions in the future which is why I am looking #FillEveryShelf in my classroom!
