My students are sassy, smart kids that are thirsty to learn something new and exciting. These students come from a variety of backgrounds with poor income across the board. Life has given them a rough start, but they are resilient and have been developing a love of reading. I had a student that we will call Sarah who came to me every day she was reading Harry Potter because the book was falling apart. She wanted to read the book desperately, but was struggling to read it with the book falling to pieces. We tried to tape it multiple times and finally got it to stay together. Although we fixed it the best we could, it was difficult to read with the great deal of tape. Unfortunately, this is the case with many books available to my students. Even with this misfortune, my students, just like Sarah, still want to read an experience books every day. I love how much my students want to read and want to give them every opportunity to be able to read.
My Project
A variety of multicultural books on Cinderella will provide my students with an author's study of comparing the same fairy tale in various places. In addition, the Christmas books will provide more books for an author's study during Christmas time. Finally, all of the books will provide my students with new books to read and enjoy when so many of the books they read are falling apart. I have students ask me daily for tape to fix books. Students with that constant dedication to taking care of old broken books deserve to have brand new books to cherish and enjoy daily.
