My students frequently ask me to recommend young adult literature that is ";real" and that deals with situations they are currently experiencing. These books are tried and true favorites of teens, and I'd love to have a small set of them in my classroom library. Seeing my students read for pleasure is one of the greatest rewards of being a classroom teacher!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban high school where over 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students do not own any books and are not familiar with reading for pleasure. They frequently ask me if I can recommend books for them to read. They ask for books that they can relate to - books that encompass the teenage experience.
I would love to have a small classroom library of young adult literature so that I can readily recommend books for my students to read for their own enjoyment. These books must be compelling for teens and reflect issues that teenagers today experience. If I had a small library of books, a large number of students could share the books, and everyone could benefit!
The books that I have requested are popular with teens because they deal with relatable issues. They are tried and true, "teen tested," highly readable books that are very well-written. Once students read one of these books, they beg for more. I know that having this classroom library will benefit my students in many ways and encourage them to be lovers of reading.
Your help will ensure that my students will have interesting and exciting young adult literature that they can read and enjoy at their leisure. These books will provide them with hours of entertainment and introduce them to the concept of reading for pleasure. Because these novels focus on issues that many teens experience, they will help students know that they are not alone in their experiences.
