Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach 3rd grade in a low economic area, where many of these students are second language learners. Most of these same students are also on free or reduced lunch.

Our school is starting a new reading/language arts program. Each day students are to have 30 minutes of uninterrupted individual reading. This means that students will need to find a good place to read in the classroom and stay there during this whole time. A lot of times students find a book, read it for a couple of minutes, go back to the classroom library, pick out another book, go back to their reading area, read that book for a couple of minutes, go back to the library, get another book, and so on. Most of the time is spent walking back and forth choosing new books.

With this new system students will have leveled books in their OWN book organizer. When the individual reading time starts, students will take their book organizer to their reading area. The organizer will have multiple books that fit their reading skills and they will be able to stay seated and read during this time. This means there will be less time wasted with movement in the classroom and trying to choose books.

Your help will ensure that my students feel that they are important and responsible enough to have their own organizer and space.
