My students need 69 books on their reading level and we are in a middle school without k-3 grade books! These books seem basic, but will challenge my students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it’s like to struggle as a reader? Can you imagine being in 5th grade and you struggle with every book that your teacher hands you? It is not fair that my students have to struggle and become frustrated because I cannot provide material for their reading abilities.
I teach a special ed inclusion fifth grade literacy class and my students need your help because they are lacking the basic comprehension skills to help them succeed in their lives.
These students are from a rough inner city where they face poverty, violence, and gang activity every day of their lives. Every day they come to school is another day that I strive to play catch-up with them because they are behind multiple grade levels. They are lacking the basic skills to read and comprehend what they are reading. Besides struggling in reading, they are also facing the problem of hyper activity which is hard to handle with trying to sit down and read and build comprehension as well as vocabulary. Half of the class is classified as special needs and those students in particular face multiple challenges while trying to reach their IEP goals and trying to live their life in a rough inner city.
My Project
The resources that I requested for your help will not only benefit these students for my class, but they will be beneficial for their rest of their lives. I requested basic books to give my students the confidence when reading. These books include essential life reading skills such as learning the sounds in order to read as well as basic sight words. I have students who are struggling with the sounds of letters and cannot sound out words. These basic books will help build a foundation for these students to begin the building blocks for the rest of their lives. They are functioning on a second to third grade vocabulary work bank and if they continue they will graduate high school with a middle school vocabulary and a middle school reading comprehension level. These items that I requested will impact these students for the rest of their lives so that when they leave my class, hopefully they will be leaving on grade level or above. Please help!
You will make is possible to give my students something that they can retain and carry with them for the rest of their lives.
In life you need to know how to read and comprehend and these children will have a hard time functioning without these basic skills that we acquired through our education. They face situations that will alter our lives every day of their lives and they need our help! They need these basic skills not only for my class, but for the rest of their lives.
