My students need access to diverse literature and nonfiction texts; however, books are a luxury afforded to those with expendable money. Providing students with access to transformational texts like Gray's Anatomy is an act of justice!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an environment that is commonly described as “urban” or “underserved;” however, the students I work with are more than capable, and will continue to thrive and prosper. Resilient scholars who aspire to earn college credits as they earn their high school dimploma, these dual-enrolled students are taking classes at the local community college, being exposed to college curriculum beginning at the age of fourteen!
In our English Classroom, students are expected to read and write, speak and listen, every day.
The students I work with matriculated from many different middle schools in the district with one intention: to earn enough college units to graduate with an Associate’s Degree. As a result, they will be able to apply as transfer students to four-year universities and colleges. It is important to note that our school is only three years old, so our first batch of seniors will begin their last year of high school in August of 2018.
My students are diverse. While some can read at college levels, others are on grade level, or a bit lower; where one can write a well-developed first draft, another needs more revision. Regardless, they are all aspiring for greatness.
My Project
Everyone loves to read naturally, but for some it is a matter of finding the right book. According to Nancy Atwell, a foundational author on teaching writing and reading, students need access to different types of texts that speak to them. As a result, I have hand selected dozens of texts for our classroom library that can inspire my students. In committing to invest in my classroom, rest assured that these books will be well-taken care of and absolutely loved by my students.
These are students who aspire to be doctors and lawyers, computer scientists and detectives, teachers and community activitsts.
As a result, I aspire to provide their minds with the fodder that will nurture their growing intellects.
Some books provide easier-to-understand introductions to higher level concepts like logic and philosophy in a graphic novel format. Other books can spark a love for reading, or an obsessive curiosity to learn the entire human anatomy by studying Medical School, or Law School materials. These are the kinds of books that will change my student's lives. Thank you for your consideration!
