I have 100 students - three separate groups. Every year these new-to-5th-grade kiddos enter my classroom with anticipation and excitement. 5th grade is a wonderful year to grow in all ways - academically and as citizens.
I love these young fifth graders - always so eager and ready to work - yet, for some, reading has not captured them in its wonderful grip.
In my 35 years, I have repeatedly found that a great book can make all the difference in the world.
My Project
I don't use quality literature to teach students to read. Of course the students' reading ability improves with every novel they travel through - but that's a most delicious additional outcome! I actually use quality literature so that students discover the incredible magic of books. As the students read, they continually analyze the text - including character, plot, exposition, and theme. I always tell my students that reading is the most important skill they can learn - because if they can read, they can teach themselves anything. Help me provide books that make each and every student be captured by literature for life.
