My Students
My 6th, 7th and 8th graders enter school far behind their peers due to their learning disability. They are placed in my classroom as a result of their Individual Education Plan (IEP) and their low state test scores. Reading and writing are a constant area of struggle that they work hard daily to overcome. I strive to instill a love of reading that will carry them into adulthood as well as build on their ability to communicate through written words.
My Project
I teach a diverse group of students that long to read books they can see a piece of themselves in. Within the books I have selected you will not only find books that are diverse, but are also written by authors my students will be able to relate to. My students come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of challenges they face every day.
This selection of books will help them know that they are not alone. There have been others that have faced the similar problems but have come out stronger on the other side. Some of the novels deal with individuals that are Muslims, Hispanics, refugees, African Americans and those that are struggling with finding their true identity.
