My Students

In a school of over 2,500 students and they are from every aspect of life that can be imagined. I have students from a variety of economic, social, ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. These demographics have been shifting slight over the years to include more diversity.

As the school library there is therefore a need to have a varied collection to appeal to all types of readers.

And with the shifting that is occurring there is a also a need to diversify the collection. Every reader should be able to find themselves represented in the collection of book that the school library has to offer.

My Project

Once students hit high school many of them stop being readers. My goal as a high school librarian is to try to get my students to once again read for pleasure.

One factor that helps to draw teens back to reading is having books they will actually read.

Teens often have two goals in mind, even if they do not realize it when they connect to a book. They want to see themselves reflected in the tale, often as the main character. Or they want to use the book to escape from real life into a new life, this can be based in reality or a fantasy world.
