Help me give my students books they can read. The science of reading support phonics instruction and decodable books offer them the opportunity to practice their phonics while enjoying a book they can read.
Our school serves over 700 students. This reading project will serve 40 elementary aged boys and girls who are eager to begin their journey to becoming fluent readers. I teach students who are behind their peers in a small group setting. Most of my students are second language learners. They are eager to learn. The small group setting is very powerful because I have the opportunity to notice what they are struggling with since I only have six or less at a time. There are not outside distractions so the setting is ideal.
Although 80% of them live in poverty, and more than 60% of these young boys and girls are overcoming the language barriers of learning a second language, they are hard workers who only wish to achieve at the same rate as their peers, and one day leave their footprint on our community and the world.
They share their future dreams with me as we explore the path they need to take to get there.
My Project
These books will encourage students to read and learn to love to read. I work with students who struggle learning to read and often can't find books they can read themselves. Students often tell me I can't read. Decodable books like these show students they can read. It's all about the book choice. I match the skills they have mastered with the right book and they absolutely can read.
Students enjoy books that they can read because they feel successful.
We all need to feel success in order to keep trying. So many kids don't pick up a book because they don't believe it's within their ability to read it or they pick up a book and pretend to read it which has absolutely no benefit. I want to change their perception and match students with books they not only can read but love as well.
