Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes, and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that, I strive to help my students in any way possible.

My Project

I have been working hard to create a classroom library that my students can have access to both in school and at home. With the help of donors, I have been able to make this a reality. Now I'm asking for donations to add supplemental books that include diverse characters and teach valuable social-emotional skills that many of my students need help with. I think it's important for students to be able to see other children like themselves in the books they read.

"Children need books that are mirrors that allow them to see themselves and their own experiences, windows that they can look through to see other worlds that they can then compare to their own, and doors that allow them to enter other worlds." —Rudine Sims Bishop.

I have created a list of books of famous celebrities that have overcome challenges much like the ones they face, books that teach social-emotional skills, and books about cultural traditions. With these books, I hope it encourages my students to read and helps them realize they can achieve anything they put their minds to.

Many of my students are not being taught critical social-emotional skills at home like self-regulation, empathy, problem-solving, kindness, etc. I'm hoping these books will help teach my students these valuable skills and give them the confidence they need to go after their goals in life; along with helping to increase their reading fluency and vocabulary.
