My Students

Students from my school come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The majority of them are 2-3 grade levels behind in reading, writing, and mathematics and have struggled to catch up since middle school.

They come to my school hoping to become lawyers so that they can make a difference in the world around them.

In essence, they want to become contributing members of society, not just functioning ones. They want to learn and just need a little more support to make them better contenders in a competitive world.

My Project

We need brand new copies of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The copies we have now have torn covers, missing pages, and look so old that students hardly want to touch them. Additionally, students want the ability to annotate in the books they read. Annotating is such an important reading strategy and our school emphasizes it, especially in English classes. Lastly, as an English teacher, I would love for my students to build personal libraries at home. Having books to keep will give them the opportunity to revisit books - as well as their observations about them - and share them with their family and friends.
