Our school is a Title I school with a low socio-economic and transient population. 99% of the children receive free/reduced lunch. Students are provided food bags for the weekends. The school has a family resource center to support families. Many of our students are faced with social and emotional instability situations.
In spite of this, they are excited and eager to learn.
We have a blocking schedule for our third graders. Therefore, I am able to get to know, work with and reach all 55 of our third graders here.
My Project
A print-rich classroom filled with books offers unique and specific access to the essential components of reading instruction.
The more students read, the better their vocabulary, their ability to read, and their knowledge of the world.
Giving students the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of reading materials
in their favorite genres and topics develops the “wonder and joy of reading that can only be derived from reading” (Fletcher & Lyon, 1998).
This large selection of books will give my students that print-rich classroom that they need. It will help them grow as readers, with books that they helped pick out.
