Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
They are the best and the brightest in our school, yet they don't have the books needed to succeed.
The students in my AP English class are bright, enthusiastic young men and women who love reading challenging texts and engaging in high-level academic discourse.
The problem? With budget cuts, there is no money for textbooks or even class sets of novels. My students who are enrolled in this college-level class have not been exposed to the level of literature they should because of a lack of funding.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting copies of the new novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens, to be read in my two AP English Literature classes. We will spend five weeks reading Owens' coming of age novel, analyzing the characters, themes, and language through our daily Socratic seminars. By providing students with their own copy of the text, students will be able to not only read this amazing story, but annotate for vocabulary, motifs, and stylistic devices. This novel will also allow students to experience life outside of New York City, as they are transported by page to the marshes of coastal North Carolina.
By reading and engaging in a study of literature that pushes boundaries and opens new worlds, my students will be ready for college and the world beyond.
