Books Needed to Inspire Readers to Read!

My students need a variety of leveled books, read-alongs and book activity boxes.

My Students

I am a special education teacher who teaches a 4/5 mixed grade 12:1:1 self-contained class in Jamaica, Queens. The students all have IEPs and have range of disabilities, including speech and language delays emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays and various learning disabilities.

Many of the students are reading significantly below grade level.

The lowest reading level is F which is equivalent to reading on a 1st grade level. One 5th grader reading level is Q which is 3rd grade. Many students are unable to develop a love and a mastery of reading due to the poor condition of our classroom library. The books are out dated and in very poor condition. The titles are not interesting to the students. The books do not interest the kids getting them choose to read independently is very challenging. In addition to those challenges, the technology and other materials are sparse and outdated as well.

My Project

These materials will be used to kickstart, inspire, and sustain independent reading for students who are struggling readers. The readers will use the books during daily Independent Reading time and for the students to take home and read for homework.

The books will be used to create and sustain a community of readers who will become excited about reading!

The books will be used for book clubs. The fluency reader's theater packs will be used for the students to practice reading to each other on a level where they can feel successful. I am looking forward to seeing the excitement in the students faces when the books arrive.
