Hello! I am an eighth grade literacy teacher in Park Slope Brooklyn. Because I teach an inclusion classroom with both special education and mainstream students, my class is a diverse group of hard working inner city girls and boys who range from third grade reading levels to those who clearly read at high school levels.
I try to nurture a love of reading for all of my students, but much of the curriculum focus must be on improving the lower level students for the ELA exam. I have a well equiped library for those lower level students, however I have few books that would engage and challenge the students who are reading at 8th grade reading level and above. It is those high achievers that I would love to be able to reward with rich, challenging texts that they could use to stimulate their minds and model their creative writing after. Unfortunately, most cannot afford to purchase books on their own.
Students love to talk about the books they read, and book conversations are one of the ways students begin to think more deeply about text. Because of this, I have my students set up book clubs, where they can all read the same book, and discuss it with their peers.
My students and I would be extremely grateful to receive a variety of nonfiction novels suitable for eighth grade students, in groups of six, for use in book clubs. They are very interested in young adult novels such as "The Clique Series" by Lisi Harrison, "Life is Funny," by E.R. Frank, "America," "Katie.Com" and "Feed," as well as any other young adult books you feel would engage and challenge the motivated girls and boys in my class.
Thank you for any help you can give me with supplying these wonderful high achievers with the quality young adult books they deserve!
