My students are a boisterous group that have a lot of desire for success in school, but don't quite have the skills. They crave structure that can help them find a comfortable, safe space to explore who they are and who they want to be.
Most students are entering school without a lot of confidence in their ability to be successful.
School has not always been a very positive place and that is slowly changing. As they are preparing to look ahead to high school, they are starting to see how school can be a way to get the life they want.
My Project
The students in these classes have not met the grade level standards in English last year (or in many cases, for many years). Our schedule is designed to provide them with an extra block of time to practice their reading and writing skills.
The most important part of being a reader is to love reading, and these books will help them find that love.
School should not just be a place where they are forced to read because it's good for them, but a place where they learn to love learning. Any time they spend reading, they are becoming a better reader. How better than to help improve test scores than by doing something enjoyable and meaningful.
