I currently teach first grade. The students are excited every day to be in school. The students come from low-income households. At school, I want to give them every opportunity to learn and explore. They love that they are learning to add and subtract in math. Also, students are currently beginning to read! This is very exciting and they try and read everything they can from posters to books.
The children and families in our school community are a diverse cross-section of many different cultures, ethnic groups, and languages.
We have an English as a Second Language Program. We educate children from 24 different countries, who speak 15 different languages. The students speak Bosnian, Spanish, Arabic, Albanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Sudanese, Somalian, Swahili, French, Kirundi, Bantu, Burmese, Vietnamese, Nepali, and Mai-Mai.
My Project
In first grade students are just beginning to learn to read. The books selected are ones my students will be able to read by the end of first grade independently. A lot of the books picked are Biscuit, Mia, and truck and plane books because the students absolutely love these kinds of stories. These books will help broaden my classroom library of My First I Can Read books.
My students will be able to read these books to spark their interest in reading for the rest of their lives.
When students first learn to read they want to read anything possible. These books will expand my classroom library!
