My class is comprised of first graders. Many of them come from bilingual and low-income homes. Free breakfast and lunch are provided for all students. We have a District program to help supply basic supplies to our most needy students, such as clothing, glasses, backpacks, and school supplies.
Our school has an excellent reputation due to the commitment of the staff and parents to provide the best education possible for the students.
First-grade is the magical year where most kids learn to read. Putting an engaging and fun book in their hands is one of the best ways to instill a lifelong love of reading.
My Project
My first-grade readers are just beginning to discover the joy of reading. Some of them are already readers, but most are just developing this complex and magical skill.
"The more you read the better you read, so read, read, read!" We say this little chant frequently throughout the year to remind and encourage our students that the only way to get better at reading is to do it.
Having a familiar and friendly book that they love is one of the best ways to get students hooked on reading. We call these favorite books their "Huggable, Lovable, Unbelievable" book. First-grade favorites continue to be books by Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman. I am hoping to build my classroom library with more of these great books that make kids excited to read.
