My Project
I was sure there had to be better stories out there than some of the stories our curriculum has been using and we have been on a search to find them. Recently, we read a story called Brave Irene which should teach the lesson of never giving up, but it was a story about a young girl delivering a ball gown in a snowstorm. This book was harmful and we immediately stopped the lesson and had a discussion and wrote about why it wasn’t okay to have this young girl do this.
I promised my students I would look for books to replace some of the harmful books that have been traditionally used in our curriculums and after talking to friends and librarians we were able to find alternatives that are beautiful and teach the same lessons in a much more culturally responsive and beautiful way.
We look forward to having books with characters who look and feel the way we do. We look forward to walking into a classroom and seeing a diversity of kids that reflect our diversity. We look forward to learning about each other.
