Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our predominantly Hispanic, low income students value education and participating in sports but money for extracurriculars and supplies is very tight.
When we discussed our American Literature choices in our Anthology, for the upcoming year, they noticed that there were no Hispanic protagonists in any of the core literature.
It hurt their feelings that they weren't represented and thought maybe DonorsChoose.org could help. This positive outlook is what impresses me so much. They said until they become writers of textbooks they will find a solution for my future students as well as themselves.
My Project
The two novels my students want to read this year are I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Diaz and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.
These two books have Hispanic protagonists, Hispanic authors and speak to our current generation.
Because they are willing to read then they should have books that represent their culture,
I have two sections of American Literature with 40 students in each and having 80 copies of each novel would make a huge difference in their reading life. I would be able to plan conversations across the class periods where they can discuss these two books. We would be delighted to start with this one title, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and then maybe next year we can get the second title.
